A block template defines the structure of a cue block: the fields it contains, how they are laid out, and what producers see on the collapsed block. This article walks through how to create one from scratch.
Create a new block template
Click '+' in the left sidebar. A new block template opens immediately in 'Editing' mode, named 'UNTITLED'.
Name, color, and icon
Use the header bar at the top of the canvas to give your block template an identity:
Click the name field and type a name. Keep it under ~20 characters.
Click the color swatch to choose a color. This color appears next to the template name in the sidebar.
Click the icon button (left of the name) to pick an icon from the library, or select 'No Icon'.
Assign a category
Click the category dropdown in the header to assign the block template to an existing category, or click 'Create category' at the bottom of the dropdown to add a new one.
Categories group related block templates together in Blockz.
See Block template categories for more on how to organize your template library.
Block editor layout
The editor has two areas:
Field rows - fields are arranged in rows and can be placed side by side in columns.
Media fields - media fields always appear on the right side of the canvas. This area is only shown when at least one media field exists.
Field drag handles appear in edit mode.
Add fields
Click '+ Add Field' at the bottom of the canvas. A searchable picker lists the available field types:
Plain text - free-text input; supports character limits and default values
Label - single or multi-select from color-coded options you define
Media - attach a clip, graphic, still, or audio file; always appears on the right side of the canvas
Boolean - a yes/no toggle
List - a dropdown populated from a list configured in Cuez Admin
MOS - links a block to a story item in a connected NRCS; only available once MOS is configured for the repository
For full details on each type and its configuration options, see Block template field types.
Arrange field layout
Fields can be placed side by side in columns by dragging them horizontally. Drag a field's handle left or right and a blue dashed outline shows where it will land. Drag vertically to reorder fields within the template.
Show fields on the collapsed block
Fields set to 'View in Abstract' stay visible in the collapsed block row in Cuez Rundown. To set a field in the Abstract, click the six-dot handle next to the field and select 'View in Abstract'.
See View in Abstract: showing fields on a collapsed block for more on choosing which fields to show.
Edit mode
Blockz saves automatically. There is no Save button. Exit edit mode by opening the '···' menu on the top right and choosing 'Exit edit mode'.
Any changes you make to a block template will appear automatically in connected Cuez Rundown sessions.
See How block template updates propagate to Cuez Rundown in real time.
Copying a template to other repositories
To reuse a template in other repositories, open the '···' menu and select 'Copy to other repositories'.
This is a one-time copy, so later changes to the original are not carried over to the copies. Categories are not copied either, so the template appears under 'Uncategorized' in each destination repository.
